Sea Bags, which designs and makes upscale totes from recycled sail cloth, has acquired a Portland specialty jeweler.

The acquisition of Chart metalworks, a maker of hand-cast nautical chart jewelry and other specialty items, expands Sea Bags’ line of nautical-themed lifestyle pieces. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Its product line of handcrafted custom nautical jewelry is a great complement to Sea Bags line of totes and accessories made from recycled sails,” said Don Oakes, chief executive at Sea Bags in a release. “It also really formalizes what was already a strong working relationship between the companies. Both brands are similar in that they are authentically nautical, made in Maine, and enable our customers to tell their own story through our custom-made products.”

Chart metalworks was founded in 2008 by Charlotte and John Guptill. They will continue to be an integral part of the company on a day-to-day basis, and the business will remain in its current location on Pleasant Street in Portland.
