The Franklin County Animal Shelter is offering free cat adoptions Saturday in an attempt to “empty the shelter.”

“We have so many cats looking for good homes right now,” shelter officials say on the shelter’s website.

The shelter, on Industry Road in Farmington, will still charge the standard $100 fee for kitten adoptions, but fees for some dogs will be reduced.

The shelter was closed Friday as workers got it ready for the event.

Normally, the fee to adopt adult cats is $75, and senior cats are donation-based. Adult dogs can range from $50 to $175 and puppies from $200 to $350.

The website says last year’s Empty the Shelter event was “standing room only” and also urges prospective cat adopters to take advantage of the special program this month that waives the adoption fee for adult cats if the adopter brings in a 10-pound bag of cat food.

The shelter is open noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
