WINTERPORT — A car driven by a Winterport woman was struck by a train Wednesday afternoon, sending the driver to a Bangor hospital.

According to the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, Danielle Godley, 36, was driving her four-door 2007 Hyundai on Meadow Road when the accident occurred around 2:35 p.m.

As Godley approached a railroad crossing near Ellingwood Corner, she didn’t notice a train nearing the crossing, according to the sheriff’s office.

The train conductor, Spencer Falardeau, 34, of Norridgewock, and engineer Anthony Goodine, 49, of Atkinson, stated the train was sounding its horn nearly a quarter-mile before the crossing, the sheriff’s office said. The release didn’t say who was operating the train, which is owned by Central Maine and Quebec Railway.

Godley’s vehicle was almost across the tracks when the train struck the driver’s side rear door, pushing the car off the road and into a ditch.

Godley was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to the sheriff’s office.
