AUGUSTA — A 43-year-old man was apparently shot by a masked assailant who was robbing him of money and illegal drugs early Saturday morning in north Augusta.

According to a media release issued Monday by the Augusta Police Department, the investigation revealed that the shooting and robbery occurred at a home on Burns Road.

“After interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence, investigators were told that the suspect in this incident was described as a black male wearing a ski mask, and that the victim sustained his injuries during an armed robbery involving money and illegal drugs,” said the release from Deputy Chief Jared Mills. Mills also indicated that the victim was specifically targeted rather than a victim of random violence.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Augusta Police Detective Sgt. Jason Cote at 626-2370 ext. 3424.

The victim, who is expected to recover from the injuries, first told police he had been shot by an unknown man and provided few details. He was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center.

The gunshot wound was reported to Augusta Police after Maine State Police determined that it occurred within the city. The call came into the Augusta Police Department at 5:25 a.m. Saturday.
