AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine’s young deer hunters are taking to the woods on the state’s annual day for youth hunting.

Youth Deer Hunting Day is Saturday. Bucks may be taken statewide, and antlerless deer may be taken in parts of the state where it is allowed. State officials suggest hunters consult with authorities before hunting.

Youth Deer Hunting Day precedes the state’s main firearms hunting season for deer. That season begins Nov. 2 and ends Nov. 28. Archers can continue until Dec. 12 in some parts of the state.

Maine is issuing 28,770 deer hunting permits, down from 37,185 permits last year. The tough winter culled the population in some parts of Maine.
