WATERVILLE — Trevor Lyons’ interception return for a touchdown was the difference in the game, lifting the Bates College football team to a 10-9 win over rival Colby College at Alfond Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Bates (1-5) can clinch the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin title with a win over Bowdoin next Saturday. This was the Bobcats’ first win at Colby (1-5) since 1999.

With the score tied 3-3 early in the third quarter, Lyons returned his interception 31 yards to put Bates ahead for good.

With 13:31 left in the game, Colby scored on a 1-yard run by quarterback Christian Sparacio. Things got interesting on the extra point try. Bates had been offside on Sparacio’s touchdown run, but the officials had not made the announcement when Colby kicker John Baron made the extra point. The Mules were forced to kick again, and this time, the kick was blocked by Collin Richardson, giving the Bobcats the eventual one-point winning cushion.

Jabari Hurdle-Price led the Colby offense with 120 yards rushing. Steve O’Grady had eight tackles for the Mules.

Quarterback Patrick Dugan ran for 38 yards and threw for 43. The Mules outgained the Bobcats, 262 yards to 168.
