Bangor police on Wednesday released the name of the man killed by a police officer Tuesday, and the name of the officer who shot him.

Officer Ryan Jones, a six-year veteran of the department, is on paid leave after shooting Joshua Jozefowicz, 23, of Hancock County.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. after Jones stopped a car at 1105 Hammond St.

Bangor Police Chief Mark Hathaway said at a news conference Tuesday night that the driver of the car got out and ran toward a wooded area. The officer chased the man and fired at him.

Jozefowicz died in the incident. Jones was not injured.

Ryan Wylie, who witnessed the incident, told WCSH-TV that after the person ran off he heard about 12 gunshots.

After the shooting, police were seen leading a woman away in handcuffs, the TV station reported. She had been a passenger in the car with the man who was shot.

Detectives from the Attorney General’s Office are required by law to investigate any use of deadly force by a police officer and the attorney general determines whether the use of deadly force was justified.

Jozefowicz pleaded guilty in 2013 in Hancock County Superior Court to felony possession of oxycodone and the district attorney dropped a charge of felony drug trafficking, according to the State Bureau of Identification. He was given a suspended sentence, the records said. The felony conviction disqualifies him from carrying a gun.

He was fined $200 for carrying a concealed weapon in Ellsworth in 2012.

Jozefowicz’ driver’s license is suspended for failing to pay a fine, according to the Secretary of State’s driving record database. His license was first suspended in 2008 when he failed to pay a fine for littering from a vehicle, the records said.
