SOUTH CHINA — The Erskine girls basketball team walked off the court a winner just once all of last season.

The Eagles wasted little time finding that feeling in this one.

Mallory Chamberlain scored 15 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, and Erskine edged Oceanside 52-47 in a Class A North season-opening game Friday night.

“We had our ups and downs last year but the seniors came back through the summer with a fire,” Erskine coach Mitch Donar said. “They put a belief in others that we would be ready this year.”

The Eagles were ready Friday night.

Taylor McLaggan also scored 15 points and Malorie Weaver added 10 for Erskine, which trailed by three at the half (27-24).

Alexis Mazurek scored a team-high 12 for Oceanside while Makenna Brooks added 11.

Erskine led 38-36 heading into the fourth quarter but Oceanside pulled ahead by three with about three minutes remaining.

That’s when Chamberlain took over, Donar said.

“She hit a 3-pointer to tie it and that got the crowd into it,” he said. “The tide began to swing our way.”

Erskine pulled ahead and never looked back, making its free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

“We got it done at the end,” Donar said.

Erskine, which finished 1-17 last season, made 17 of its 26 free throws.

“It’s a good win,” Donar added. “We didn’t have any wins at home last season so this is good. We’ll take it.”
