A service dog for a disabled military veteran was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Saturday afternoon, Berwick police said.

Police said the vet was picking up his mail shortly after noon on Cemetery Road when a passing car hit the dog, a 7-year-old German shepherd named Sophia.

The car was described as a beige or tan 1990s-vintage sedan, possibly a Buick or Oldsmobile, said Sgt. Jeff Pilkington of the Berwick Police Department. The car originally seemed to slow down after the collision, but then sped off toward Pine Hill Road, police said.

The owner, who has had the dog since it was less than a year old, was not injured, Pilkington said.

As of Saturday evening, Pilkington said, police hadn’t received any tips on the car or driver.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call 698-1136.
