Two men from southern Maine have been charged with theft and burglary after Carrabassett Valley police followed their footprints in the snow to a condominium where the two were staying and allegedly had stashed an estimated $2,200 worth of stolen property, police said.

Shawn Anthony, 18, of Freeport, and Rene Mesones, 20, of North Yarmouth, were arrested Saturday, and both were charged with class B felony burglary and misdemeanor theft after they allegedly forced entry into four condominiums over the weekend, Carrabassett Valley police officer Rick Billian said Monday.

The two men broke into four Black Bear condominium residences through windows early Saturday morning, police allege. No one was home at three of the condos, but when Anthony and Mesones entered the fourth condo, a dog in the residence barked, waking the sleeping owners. When the owners turned on the lights, Anthony and Mesones fled, police said.

Police officers Troy Reed, Billian and Police Chief Mark Lopez were called to assist shortly after the initial call at 4 a.m.

Police followed footprints in the snow that led to a Black Bear condo where Mesones and Anthony had been staying, Billian said. Inside, police said they found the two suspects and $2,200 worth of stolen goods. The stolen items included ski equipment and electronics.

The owners of the first three condos have been notified of the burglaries, and Billian said the investigation is still pending while police wait for the owners to compile lists of all the items missing from their condos.

Anthony and Mesones were arrested and taken to the Franklin County Jail in Farmington on Saturday. Anthony was bailed later that day on $5,000 cash bail.

Mesones made his initial court appearance at the Franklin County District Court Monday. His disposition conference is scheduled for Feb. 26, a Franklin County court clerk said.
