The Farmingdale Selectmen, Spirit of America and Historical Society recently held an awards and appreciation night.
The Boston cane was presented to Ethelyn Purdy and Hilda Brooks. Purdy’s award was accepted by her daughter, Barbara Gipson, and Brooks’ award was accepted by family friend Shirley Taylor.
The Boston Cane tradition dates back to 1909 when the Boston Post newspaper distributed hundreds of inscribed canes to communities in New England. The town’s original cane is encased at the town office on display, along with a plaque with the recipients’ names and dates inscribed.
A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to J&S Oil Co., with Justin Hewitt, manager, accepting.
The school board, Linda Leet and Jon Lambert, was recognized for their many years of service.
All award recipients received a copy of Farmingdale’s 150th history.
