GARDINER — Bagley-Gardiner-Foster Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9 recently held its award ceremony for the Voice of Democracy winners. The Voice of Democracy is an annual competition held by the Veterans of Foreign Wars for students in ninth through 12th grade. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. “My Vision for America” was this year’s theme.

Elijah Fish was the first-place winner from Post 9. He is a senior at Gardiner Area High School.

Katie Zach was the second-place winner. She is a sophomore at Gardiner.

Fish also competed at the district level in the past month and won that competition. He will now compete at the state level in the next month. If he wins at the state level he will represent Maine in Washington, D.C., with the hopes of winning up to $30,000 in scholarship money.
