Maine cabinetry maker The Kennebec Co. has been sold by its founder, Dave Leonard, to longtime employee James Stewart, the company said Monday.

Based in Bath, Kennebec was co-founded in 1974 by Leonard and Jeff Peavey, specializing in traditional kitchens in homes with early-American and other period designs. In the ensuing years, they’ve expanded the range of architectural styles they build for and have installed their custom cabinets as far away as California. Terms were not disclosed in the company statement.

Stewart, who has changed roles from president to sole owner, said he and his team are planning improvements to the business and have recently added an engineering department to build more precise cabinetry, reduce waste and lower costs.
