A 17-year-old boy was arrested Friday morning in connection with the shooting of a 47-year-old Scarborough man while he slept in his house Monday morning.

Police said the teen was stopped in a vehicle at 1 a.m. Friday and had a gun. Deputy Police Chief David Grover announced the arrest at a news conference Friday morning. He did not offer a motive for the shooting.

Police also didn’t identify the teen or say what connection he had to Bruce Glidden, who was shot twice in the torso early Monday. Charges against the boy are pending and are being reviewed by the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office.

Glidden’s brother, Bill Cashman, said he had no idea why his brother’s house was targeted.

“It came through as a big shock to all of us,” he said. He said the family is very pleased that police made an arrest and is confident investigators are working hard to determine why the attack happened.

Scarborough police received a report of a suspicious vehicle in the driveway of a residence on Pleasant Hill Road early Friday, a day after they released a description of a silver-colored vehicle that was in the area of Glidden’s Ash Swamp Road residence around 1:30 a.m. on Monday.

An officer responding to the suspicious vehicle report saw a gray Honda Ridgeline on Black Point Road driving without taillights, police said. The vehicle was similar to one that was in the area of Ash Swamp Road at the time of the shooting.

“During the stop, the officers became aware of a handgun in the vehicle,” Grover said.

Police wouldn’t say why they believe the teen is linked to the shooting.

He remained in custody at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland and is scheduled to appear in juvenile court at the Cumberland County Courthouse in Portland for a detention hearing on Monday. Unlike the adult criminal justice system, where charges must be filed before the defendant’s initial court appearance, prosecutors in juvenile cases have up to 10 days after the initial detention hearing to file a petition for charges.

Grover said the boy’s parents have cooperated with investigators.

The identities of juveniles charged with a crime are generally confidential. However, the identity of a juvenile charged with a felony becomes public once the case begins to make its way through the court system.

Police said they don’t have information that indicates anyone else was involved in the shooting, although the investigation is continuing.

Glidden was shot as he slept in the family room of his home, while his wife and two teenage children slept elsewhere in the house. His wife and children were not hurt or threatened during the attack.

Glidden was hospitalized for treatment at Maine Medical Center in Portland for about two days before being released.

Cashman said his brother is doing well and his family is doing the best it can following the traumatic ordeal.

“It’s going to be a long haul, but they’ll get through it,” he said. Cashman didn’t know the identity of the gunman or whether he lived near the Gliddens.

Glidden is an owner of Glidden Roofing Corp. in Scarborough. Cashman is another partner in the family business.

The windows of a car owned by the Gliddens were broken at the time of the shooting, police said. The windows were broken with an object, not by gunfire, Grover said Monday.

Police this week said investigators heard that a window on Glidden’s work truck had been smashed about a week before the shooting, but no police report was made at the time.
