A 56-year-old Bowdoin man was taken to a Lewiston hospital Thursday afternoon after he was overcome by smoke from a fire that destroyed his mobile home on Route 201.
Cal Paquet, a captain with the Bowdoin Fire Department, said dense smoke covered James Norman’s home and the road when crews arrived at the fire at 1156 Augusta Road – part of Route 201. The fire was reported at 2:47 p.m.
Firefighters got Norman out of the home and prevented the fire from spreading to a mobile home about 50 feet away.
Paquet said Norman, who was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, may have suffered other injuries, but he said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
A firefighter was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Bowdoin and Bowdoinham firefighters responded to the fire, along with firefighters from seven other towns.
“I was concerned about having enough staff and enough water, and I got both,” Paquet said.
There are no water sources on the property, but tankers provided enough water to extinguish the fire. Route 201 was shut down for about three hours.
Sgt. Joel Davis, an investigator with the state Fire Marshal’s Office, said the fire was caused by a bathroom electrical heater that was too close to clothing.
