PITTSFIELD — The founding father of the Sebasticook Valley Elks Lodge, Spencer Havey, was presented with a Spirit of America award by the Pittsfield Town Council on Feb. 16.

Town Manager Kathryn Ruth cited Havey’s years of service to the community as police chief, Somerset County sheriff and the first exalted ruler, or president, of the local Elks Lodge when it was chartered in 1986, according to a news release from the lodge.

“The criteria for the award are impact, compassion, intensity and longevity for volunteer efforts. Spencer’s commitment to the community and region over many decades certainly exemplifies these criteria,” Ruth said during the presentation according to the release.”

Ruth cited the charitable and community services supported by the Elks, such as the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.

Havey, who served four terms as exalted ruler, is one of only two living Honorary Life Members of the local fraternal organization.

Mayor Robert Stackhouse presented the award certificate to Havey, who was accompanied by his family.

The Spirit of America Foundation Tribute is presented to local individuals, organizations and projects for commendable community service.
