WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. — A Vermont man convicted of plotting to kill his former business partner and former girlfriend wants his sentence reduced.

Louis Fucci, the former owner of a once-thriving New Hampshire hotspot, is going to court to ask that his 10-15 year sentence be shortened, The Valley News Reported. A hearing is scheduled Tuesday in Windsor Superior Court in Vermont.

Fucci, 59, who is serving his time in Michigan, is expected to attend.

He pleaded guilty in 2013 to obstructing justice and two counts of inciting another to commit a felony.

In court documents filed last year, Fucci claims he was suffering from an untreated mental illness heightened by a “perfect storm” of coping with a divorce and the end of his relationship with his girlfriend and the failure of his business – the Benning Street Bar and Grill in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

Fucci was arrested in September 2011 on charges he paid a hitman to kill his former girlfriend, Joy Barney, and former business partner, Bruce Weissman. The supposed hitman, Sean Meiklejohn, reported Fucci’s request to police and wore a wire to record evidence against Fucci.

Prosecutors and both intended victims oppose his release.

“I’ll look over my shoulder for the rest of my life,” Weissman told the Valley News.

Barney said she is still fearful and that she and her family have planned their lives around Fucci’s sentence. If his sentence is reduced, she said, she will have to relocate.

“It affects us deeply,” she said.
