The U.S. Coast Guard has called off the search for a possible missing boat near the Isles of Shoals.
The Coast Guard said someone aboard a boat named the Whiskey Rose sent a distress signal at 7:40 p.m. Sunday, but a search that extended overnight was called off around noon Monday when no sign of the boat or mariners was found.
Officials say the person gave the name of the vessel and said it was taking on water before the signal transmission was lost. No other information was given. Coast Guard officials searched databases for the name Whiskey Rose, but found nothing.
The Coast Guard was able to track the signal to the Isles of Shoals. The group of small islands is about six miles off the coast, straddling the border of Maine and New Hampshire.
A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Portsmouth Harbor and the Coast Guard Cutter Tampa conducted the search. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry crew from Air Station Cape Cod also searched for the possible boaters in distress.
A Coast Guard spokesman said the search is over, but new information about the call could prompt an investigation.
The Coast Guard is requesting anyone with information about Whiskey Rose or its crew to call the Northern New England command center at 207-767-0302.
