The teenage driver of a 1991 Toyota Corolla was listed in critical condition Tuesday after failing to negotiate a curve in the vicinity of 917 Finntown Road in Warren, causing the car to slide off the road and sideswipe a large tree.

Chief Deputy Timothy Carroll of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office said the car went airborne after hitting the tree. The impact crushed the roof, and rescuers had to extricate the driver, 17, and a passenger, 16.

The teenagers were taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Because of their ages, police are not releasing their names. The crash was reported at 1:37 p.m.

“Speed and driver inexperience are both factors in the crash,” Carroll said in a news release. “The operator sustained serious, life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash and was listed in critical condition. The passenger suffered minor injuries.”
