Michael MacDonnell, former sous chef at Natalie’s, the restaurant at the Camden Harbour Inn, has been named executive chef at Tempo Dulu, the swanky Southeast Asian restaurant located in the Danforth Inn on the West End. Former executive chef Lawrence Klang left his position earlier this month to move to Florida, where his wife works as an attorney, according to Raymond Brunyanszki, co-owner of both inns and restaurants.

Brunyanszki said MacDonnell started his career working in Thai restaurants and was trained in that cuisine by a Laotian chef who came to the United States through Thailand in the late 1970s. MacDonnell opened his own Thai restaurant and Asian store, White Lion, in Rockland in 2009, where he worked with chefs Ravin “Bas” Nakjaroen (now of Long Grain in Camden) and Piyathida MacDonnell (his wife), also from Thailand.

Michael MacDonnell will continue to work with Tempo Dulu’s culinary consultants in Singapore.

“With my Indonesian culinary background, I will also remain very much involved in the menu development,” Brunyanszki said. “Many don’t know that I was actually trained in Indonesian cuisine and every now and then whip out a nice rijsttafel at home on a day off.”

Tempo Dulu, now open from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, will switch to its new spring menu on May 15.
