The Vienna Union Hall Association will kick off the 2016 performance season at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 23, with a local group Bad Little Falls.

Bad Little Falls is a musical collaboration that incorporates elements of classic blues, soul, jazz and Americana into a unique formula that showcases the breathtaking vocals of Jan Schmidt and the soulful guitar of Dave Richardson.

Bad Little Falls is a reference to Machias where Richardson was born and raised. Machias roughly translates in Passamaquoddy as bad little falls.

Richardson has performed in blues, rock and soul bands over the last 20 years in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine. He has a distinctive style reminiscent of his early blues oriented influences (Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King). His vocals reflect his appreciation for classic soul, Bill Withers and Van Morrison.

Jan Schmidt, originally from Rhode Island, has toured worldwide as a vocal performer with 35 years of stage experience. Her influences include Billie Holiday, Eva Cassidy and Etta James. It has been said that her passionate performances are often reminiscent of Janis Joplin.

Bad Little Falls provides a unique musical experience that is both nostalgic and refreshing.
