Training program produces four CNAs for Maine Veterans’ Home staff

The Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta recently hired Sherry Slonina, Dakota McArthur, Samantha Slonina and Heidi McQuillan as its newest certified nursing assistants.

The new arrivals had been enrolled in a CNA program through a partnership grant provided by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act through Western Maine Community Action and the Augusta CareerCenter. The candidates completed their customized classroom training determined by the Maine Veterans’ Home for their CNA certification in combination with their on-the Job work-based training. As students, they provided direct and indirect patient care and assisted with treatment-related tasks and procedures at the facility.

“While they were attending school they worked as CNAs in training,” said Becky Thayer, MVH-Augusta human resource manager. “Now that they have successfully completed their courses and passed their Maine CNA Certification Exam, they have all started their full time CNA positions with us.”

The four constituted the second group of students to join the Maine Veterans’ Home-Augusta team thanks to the grant funding.
