A Paddle to Smith Pond will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 22, on the West Branch Wesserunsett Stream, Route 150 in Skowhegan.

Somerset Woods Trustee Eric Lahti will lead the event up Wesserunsett Stream to Smith Pond.

This will be an easy paddle, about 3 miles round trip. There will be doughnuts and coffee to get started, but participants might wish to pack water and other beverages. Although the guided tour will likely return to the launching site by noon, participants might wish to bring a lunch to extend their trip. It’s always a good idea to bring mosquito repellent, hats and other sun protection. The guided trip will take approximately about 2.5 to 3 hours. Lahti has two extra kayaks and vests that can be borrowed for the paddle. There are no facilities along the route.

The launch site is on the West Branch of the Wesserunsett Stream about 2 miles north of the Skowhegan Post Office on Route 150. There is room to park along the road, but access to the river is only one car at a time. The stream is no more than 200 feet from the road. Those who wish to drive to the stream’s edge, please arrive earlier than 9:15 a.m. and be aware the car or truck will need high clearance to get over the edge of the pavement.
