A wooden fence and several wooden pallets were lightly damaged after a grass fire started early Tuesday afternoon behind a Gardiner home, according to Chief Al Nelson, of the Gardiner Fire Department.

Gardiner and Farmingdale firefighters responded to and quickly extinguished the brush fire, which started behind a Pleasant Street home.

Nelson attributed the fire to an earlier one the homeowner had set. On Sunday, Nelson said, the homeowner obtained a burn permit, burned some brush and put the fire out in the afternoon. The homeowner had not returned to the site since Sunday, he added.

“As near as I can figure, there were some embers underneath the pile that the little breeze we had today reignited,” Nelson said.

The home was not damaged, according to Nelson.
