LEWISTON — The Mt. Blue boys tennis team had three players win state singles championship qualifying matches Saturday to reach the Round of 48.
Evan Backus, Jack Leopold and Alex Bunnell all advanced out of Region 4 for the Cougars. Backus had a bye in the first round and then dispatched Jacob Girgis, of Madison, 6-1 6-0.
Leopold also had a bye in the first round before he defeated Carrabec’s Jackson Sidell 6-1, 6-1. Bunnell won two matches, beating Winthrop’s Bryce Claypool 8-1 and then Michael Gordon, of Edward Little, 6-0, 6-0.
Andy Peterson (Hall-Dale), also advanced out of Region 4. In Region 4 girls, Eryn Doiron (Mt. Blue), Megan Chamberland (Winthrop) and Madelyn Dwyer (Maranacook) also qualified.
In Region 3, Emma Cristan, of Waterville, won two matches to reach the Round of 48. She dispatched Maggie Ryan, of Medomak, 8-1 in the first round and then turned Asia Sweet, of Lawrence, aside in the second round, 6-0, 6-0. Alena Thomas (Messalonskee) and Eleanor Hodgkin (Erskine) also advanced.
BOYS LACROSSE
FRYEBURG 9, MT. BLUE 2: Evan Caracciolo scored two goals and added three assists to lead the Patriots to the Class B victory in Farmington. Jeremiah Schrader scored two goals for Fryeburg (5-2) as well. Reed Wells and Liam Welch each scored for Mt. Blue (3-3). Alex Gilbert had 31 saves.
CONY 16, BONNY EAGLE 9: Joel Bennett had five goals to spark the Rams to the win in Standish. Bret Sproul added four goals and two assists for Cony (8-0) while Tyler Sproul had three goals and four assists. Chad Bickford added two goals and Cody Lamarre and Nijual Davis had one apiece. Cam Gallant made nine saves.
WINDHAM 15, GARDINER 1: Zack Callahan recorded three goals and four assists as the Eagles (7-0) defeated the Tigers (3-5) in Windham.
Tom Lekousi and Tyler Woolston each scored three goals for Windham.
The Tigers’ goal was scored by Tristan Hebert.
GIRLS LACROSSE
FREEPORT 17, CONY 7: Taylor Dostie and Chloe Davidson each had three goals as the Falcons (3-3) cruised past Cony in Augusta. Lauren Coniff, Sarah Caron and Kami Lambert each scored two goals for Cony (4-3).
KENNEBUNK 15, MESSALONSKEE 2: Carly Sandler and Jenny Bush each had four goals and two assists as the Rams (6-0) dominated the Eagles (6-1) in a matchup of undefeated teams in Kennebunk.
Gabby Fogg added two goals and an assist, and Kristen Koch also scored twice.
Ally Turner and Lauren Pickett were the only Eagles to score against Kennebunk goalie Isabella Kudas, who finished with five saves.
BASEBALL
VALLEY 15, TEMPLE 5: Brandon Thomas had a double, two singles and four RBIs to spark the Cavaliers to the win in Bingham.
Luke Malloy added a double, two singles, an RBI and scored three runs for Valley (5-1). Temple falls to 1-6.
MOUNTAIN VALLEY 10, WINTHROP 4: John Alley drove in three runs and winning pitcher Tim Fitzgerald had two singles and an RBI as the Falcons (3-6) prevailed in a Mountain Valley Conference game in Winthrop. Matt Ingram homered for the Ramblers (3-6).
SOFTBALL
TEMPLE 6, VALLEY 2: Jaimee Feugill had three singles and three RBIs and Vanessa Currie had a triple, a single and two RBIs to spark Temple (4-3) to the win in Bingham.
Valley falls to 0-6.
