PITTSFIELD — Maine Central Institute has announced its top students from the class of 2016. The top ranking is based solely on grade-point average.

Abigail DeSchiffart, the valedictorian for the class of 2016, has been a member of Bossov Ballet Theatre, the National Honor Society, Destination Imagination, the Key Club and Student Ambassadors Club. In addition, DeSchiffart was awarded the Distinguished Delegate and Diplomacy Awards through her participation in the Model UN and was a finalist in the National Chemistry Olympiad (top 10 in the state). She has served as vice president for the class of 2016 for the past two years, as well as an honors prefect in the dormitory and a teaching assistant for chemistry classes. DeSchiffart is the daughter of Joanna and Tim DeSchiffart, of Cherryfield.

Salutatorian Gregory Vigue is a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball all four years at MCI and serving as captain of football and basketball his senior year. In addition, he has been a member of the National Honor Society, Student Leadership Committee, Key Club, the Philanthropy Council, Captains’ Club and the Student Council. Vigue has served also as a peer tutor and student mentor as well as class president. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 2014. He is the son of Emily and Andi Vigue, of Pittsfield.

Julia Bluhm has been a member of Bossov Ballet Theatre for four years. As part of BBT, she has danced several principal roles and also teaches the beginners ballet class. Bluhm is a member of the National Honor Society and was MCI’s first-ever student Patterson Lecture Series speaker. She has served on the Girls’ Advisory Board for Healthy Girls Hardy Women and is a dedicated blogger at SPARK Movement. She has been the keynote speaker at the Girls’ Coalition of Pittsburgh, the National Eating Disorder Association’s Teen Conference, the Maine Learning Technology Initiative conference and TEDx. Bluhm is the daughter of Mary Beiter and Robert Bluhm, both of Waterville.

Hailey Stewart has been a four-year member of the soccer and softball teams, serving as captain both her junior and senior years. In addition, Stewart has been a member of the Kindness Krew, Captains’ Club, National Honor Society and Ski Club. Stewart is the daughter of Heather and Tony Stewart, of Pittsfield.

Minh Mai Thu (Quinn) Dang has been a member of MCI’s Math Team where she earned several awards including third place in division B (Eastern Maine), fourth place in division C (State of Maine) and third highest scorer in the league. She is the founder and president of the Physics and Astronomy Club and a member of the tennis and JV basketball teams. She is the daughter of Mai Thi Thu Hien and Hoai Giang Dang, of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

Yingning (Rill) Ye has been a member of the Art Club, Masardis Club, Key Club and Cultural Diversity Club. She has also served as a student ambassador. Ye is the daughter of Xin Chen and Huisheng Ye, of Wenzhou, China.

Jialiang (Michael) Zhang has been a member of the Math Team, Ping-Pong Club, Cultural Diversity Club and Physics and Astronomy Club. He is the son of Xiaoxia Liang and Mingguang Zhang, of Baotou, China.

Leah Carron has been a member of the Key Club, Student Council, Class Council, Science Outing Club, Student Leadership Committee, National Honor Society and Outdoor Adventure Club. She has been involved with music as a member of the Chamber Choir, Jazz Band, Vocal Jazz and Combo I groups. In addition, Carron won first place in the esteemed Manson Essay competition her junior year. Carron is the daughter of Cynthia and Eric Carron, of Detroit.

Alexis Caldwell has been a four-year member of the field hockey and softball teams, serving as a captain of field hockey her senior year. She has also been a member of Vocal Jazz, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, National Honor Society, the Kindess Krew, Captains’ Club, Philanthropy Council, Junior Class Leadership Council and the Senior Class Leadership Council. She served as the treasurer for her class during her junior year and has also organized the school-wide Play 4 the Cure fundraiser. Caldwell is the daughter of Shandrea and Matt Caldwell, of Pittsfield.

Diyun (Didi) Wang has been a member of Bossov Ballet Theatre, the Kindness Krew, Cultural Diversity Club, and National Honor Society. She is the vice president of the Paper Art Club, a peer tutor for the Math Department and also serves as a dorm prefect. Wang is the daughter of GuoLai Feng and ShiXin Wang, of Shanghai, China.
