MONMOUTH — Sean Whalen’s double plated Eric Wescott with one out in the top of the ninth and the Madison baseball team held on to beat Winthrop 6-4 in nine innings Wednesday.

Whalen, who finished the game 2 for 5, later scored on a passed ball to give the Bulldogs a two-run cushion. Evan Bess finished 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored for Madison (14-2) while Chase Malloy — who pitched the first five innings and allowed four unearned runs — went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Ryan Emery got the win after throwing four scoreless innings of relief.

Matt Ingram went 3 for 4 with an RBI to pace Winthrop (6-9) while Cameron Gaghan was 2 for 4. Antonio Meucci was saddled with the loss despite tossing eight strong innings.

VALLEY 3, GREENVILLE 1: Cody Laweryson allowed just one run on two hits while walking none and striking out 12 to lift the Cavaliers to an East/West Conference win in Bingham.

Evan Bjork took the loss for Greenville (11-5) despite giving up just two hits and no walks while striking out six. Valley improved to 12-2.

MT. BLUE 5, BREWER 0: No. 1 Eryn Doiron and No. 3 Jennie Chen each earned straight-set victories in singles as the Cougars swept their Class A North quarterfinal match against the Witches in Farmington.

Sophie Swan earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kathryn Jakubowski to round out singles play for Mt. Blue. Hannah LeClair and Britlin Karkos picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles, while Sierra Hoes and Grace McIntosh won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2.

BOYS TENNIS

WAYNFLETE 5, MADISON 0: Brandon Ameglio, Jacob Greene and Peter Michalakes dropped a combined five games in singles play as the Flyers rolled over the Bulldogs in a Class C North quarterfinal in Portland.

After falling to Waynflete’s Thonne Kieffen and John Van Dyke 6-0 in the first game at No. 1 doubles, Madison’s Tristan Small and Caleb Harper put up a good fight in the second set before eventually succumbing 6-4.

CONY 9, OXFORD HILLS 3: Annie Brannigan scored three goals and assisted on another as the Rams picked up a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference win in Augusta.

Sam Akers added two goals for Cony (6-6) while Lizzy Dennison finished with nine saves in goal.

Arianna Greene, Alyssa Hanley and Sydney Jackson each had goals for Oxford Hills (2-10).

SOFTBALL

MONMOUTH 2, WINTHROP 0: Katie Canning tossed a three-hit shutout to lead Monmouth in a Mountain Valley Conference regular season finale for both teams in Monmouth.

Canning struck out seven and allowed just three hits and one walk in seven innings. Tia Day and Hannah Anderson had RBI singles in the fifth inning that broke the scoreless tie for the Mustangs (8-8), which spoiled a strong start by Layne Audet, of Winthrop (5-11), who allowed just six hits in six innings of work.
