I have served as the appointed Kennebec County commissioner for the past two months. I’m asked frequently, what does a commissioner do? The commissioners are like city councilors or selectpersons, only we are the governing body for Kennebec County. We have the county jail, the sheriff’s office, registry of deeds, registry of probate, and emergency management, among other departments.

Here are a few things I’ve worked on in just these two months. With others in county government, we passed a prudent 2017 budget, funded an additional deputy sheriff to help with drug issues, saved $40,000 yearly by purchasing office space for the deeds office rather than renting space, and expanded space for inmates, saving the cost of boarding our inmates in other counties. Now I will be negotiating the deputies’ union contract.

I now ask for your vote on June 14.

Patsy Crockett
