WATERVILLE — Dalton Wood pitched seven strong innings and Adam Barre delivered a game-winning RBI single in the sixth inning as the Waterville baseball team edged Mount Desert Island 2-1 in a Class B North preliminary round game Wednesday afternoon.

Andrew Roderigue singled in the sixth and later stole second with two outs. Barre then broke the 1-1 tie when he singled in Roderigue.

The No. 6 Purple Panthers (12-5) will play at No. 3 Hermon (12-4) in a regional quarterfinal game Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

Riley Swanson had an RBI single to lead No. 11 MDI (8-9).

Roderigue helped get things going for Waterville in the bottom of the first when he tripled and came home on a Justin Wentworth sacrifice fly. Wood allowed just six hits.

VALLEY 11, VINALHAVEN 1, 5 innings: The No. 2 Cavaliers scored five runs in the second inning en route to the Class D South quarterfinal win.

Luke Malloy went the distance on the mound, allowing only two hits while striking out three to earn the victory.

Cody Laweryson had a double and a single for Valley (13-2), while Nathan Ames added a pair of hits. Valley will host Richmond in a regional semifinal Friday at 4 p.m.

Vinalhaven finished its season at 7-8.

RICHMOND 3, NYA 2: The No. 3 Bobcats scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and then held on to beat No. 6 NYA in a Class D South quarterfinal in Richmond.

Matt Rines doubles for Richmond (12-5). Brady Johnson singled twice and drove in a run in the win.

Galen Arnold homered and doubled for NYA (7-10).

HALL-DALE 8, WISCASSET 7: The seventh-seeded Bulldogs broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth and then held off a late rally by the 10th-seeded Wolverines in a Class C South preliminary round game in Farmingdale.

Quinn Stebbins singled twice and picked up the win on the mound for Hall-Dale (13-4), which will face No. 2 St. Dominic in the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. on Thursday in Auburn. Ryan Sinclair added a triple and a single and Tyler Dubois a double for the Bulldogs. Cole Lockhart nailed it down in the seventh to pick up the save. Darren Wood led Wiscasset (8-9) with a double and three runs batted in.

SOFTBALL

MEDOMAK 8, ERSKINE 5: Lydia Simmons went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored as the No. 7 Panthers held off No. 10 Erskine in a Class B North prelim game in Waldoboro. Winning pitcher Gabrielle DePatsy went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Medomak (12-5), which will play at No. 2 Oceanside in the quarterfinals.

Kayla Hodgkins pitched a complete game for Erskine (9-8) and also doubled. Harley Denning had a double and an RBI for the Eagles as well.

ELLSWORTH 5, GARDINER 3: Katherine Hammer doubled to help lead No. 6 Ellsworth in a Class B North preliminary round game in Ellsworth.

Bri Brochu drove in two runs for No. 11 Gardiner (8-9), while Meghan Meehan singled and scored twice.

Kate Whitney scattered four hits in the complete game effort from the circle for Ellsworth (12-5), which travels to meet No. 3 Winslow in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
