PROCTOR, Vt. — A Vermont man has met the person who rescued him from an icy pond nearly 80 years ago.

Eighty-three-year-old Harold Loso of Castleton tells The Rutland Herald Tuesday that he was just 4 years old when he fell through thin ice on Proctor’s Beaver Pond in 1936.

Ninety-four-year-old Maurice Nelson, then 15, says he was nearby when he heard a woman scream and point toward the pond. He plunged in and pulled Loso to shore.

Years later, the Florida man tried to track down Loso’s brother., He ended up finding and meeting Loso on Friday. That’s when he says a tearful Loso informed him that he was the one Nelson had saved.
