One person was killed Wednesday night in a head-on, two-vehicle crash on West River Road in Sidney.

Laurie A. Garland, of Sidney, was driving a 2002 Dodge Stratus south and crossed the centerline and struck a northbound 2003 Pontiac Bonneville occupied by two juveniles, according to a release from Kennebec County Sheriff Ryan Reardon. Garland was pronounced dead at the scene.

The juveniles suffered minor injuries, and one of them was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center. Alcoholic beverages were found at the scene, but Reardon declined to provide details while the investigation is ongoing. He said blood tests were conducted as a matter of procedure.

The accident was reported at 9:48 p.m. near box 3834, and the road was shut down for more than three hours. Responders from the Oakland and Winslow police departments and personnel from the Sidney Fire Department and Delta Ambulance assisted at the scene.

“It is unknown at this point in the investigation whether there will be criminal charges,” Reardon said in the release. “Deputies are putting the pieces together to answer a number of questions.”

According to court documents, Garland had a history of driving-related offenses. She had a 2013 conviction for operating under the influence and other criminal driving offenses.
