The DaPonte String Quartet will launch its 25th year as a quartet with a concert series this summer that will feature a guest artist and a world premier.

The series will feature a new string quartet commissioned by the DaPonte String Quartet, and will be performed July 23-Aug. 13 in Richmond (a shortened version), Stonington, Tenants Harbor, South Bristol, Harpswell, Boothbay and Chebeague Island.

“Then and Now,” comprises three works: the world premier of Rocco Havelaar’s Quartet No. 3; Bach’s Three Contrapuncti from The Art of the Fugue, and Mendelssohn’s Quartet in F Minor Op. 80. Written toward the end of his life, The Art of the Fugue is the culmination of Bach’s experimentation with monothematic instrumental works. Mendelssohn’s quartet was an homage to his sister, a gifted composer whom he was close to, and who had died six months earlier; Felix himself died two months after writing “Requiem for Fanny.”

Havelaar’s piece was commissioned by the DaPonte String Quartet.
