Two women were killed as the result of a motor vehicle accident Tuesday morning at Route 126 and Hallowell Road in Litchfield.

Anita Wade, 82, of West Gardiner, was killed in the accident, said Kennebec County Sheriff Ryan Reardon. Wade was in the front passenger seat of a car driven by Grace Marston, 92, of West Gardiner. A third person, a 14-year-old girl, was taken to the Lewiston hospital by ambulance with less severe injuries.

Marston was taken by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center with reported life-threatening injuries including head trauma. Reardon reported just before 9 p.m. Tuesday that Marston had died.

Reardon said Marston was driving a Chevrolet Impala, crossing from Hallowell Road onto Hallowell-Litchfield Road, when her car collided with a tractor-trailer being driven by Robert Morang, 67, of Chelsea, which was empty at the time and heading south on Route 126/9 toward Tacoma Lakes. His vehicle is owned by Steven A. McGee Construction.

Morang was uninjured and spoke to law enforcement officers at the scene, Reardon said.

The crash was first called in around 11 a.m., and emergency responders called for extrication tools as well as an officer to do reconstruction. EMS personnel arrived first and reported that the sedan was partially lodged under the front end of the tractor-trailer, and both vehicles were in a ditch.

Reardon said a blood test would be done on the driver, as is usual in serious crashes, but there was no indication he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Responders from Litchfield, Gardiner and Monmouth assisted with the scene.

The road reopened shortly after 4 p.m.
