The Maine Compass by Morgan Beland, “Seniors suffer in silence,” June 15, is a sad reminder of how the elderly suffer abuse. As the article said, “adults who take advantage of the elderly are the worst kind of people.”

It’s even worse when it seems there’s little or no punishment anymore for many crimes, including elder abuse. Every time I read about a case of elder abuse, it reminds me of a case years ago when an elderly lady’s caregiver stole from her all but around $50,000 out of around $300,000. The caregiver was sentenced to six months in jail and paid back no restitution.

Police believed others were involved but couldn’t prove it — they know who they are and they all should be ashamed of themselves.
