How was my Fourth of July? About as good as my July 1, 2 and 3. That’s when the fireworks started in my neighborhood. They didn’t stop until late on the Fourth.

Now what is real disturbing is people can do this any night of the week. Because fireworks are legal in Maine and can be set off from 9 in the morning until 10 at night. Think about that for a minute.

Now the pet issue. My dog has come out from under the bed and stopped shaking finally. The vet says I can drug him but I choose not to; I just cannot do that. I live in a very tight neighborhood and the houses are so close. What about my rights if I don’t want fireworks in my back yard?

Let me stress the weather has been very dry. I think the people of Maine should have been able to vote on whether we want fireworks legal. I never saw anything about that until I picked up a paper and it said it is now legal to set off fireworks.

Why can’t we celebrate by having a little respect for our neighbors and the men and women who fought so we all have rights in this great nation?

The fireworks go up, there’s a loud noise, and they come down — now what? The money is gone and all that’s left are ashes and a lot of mad people who just wanted to enjoy their evening in their home. I just don’t get it.
