Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection has issued an air quality alert for Thursday.

Ground-level ozone is expected to reach unhealthy levels in coastal Maine from Kittery to Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. The agency also warns that moderate particle pollution is likely in the Portland area.

Downeast and interior Maine may experience moderate levels of ozone.

The elevated ozone levels combined with hot and humid weather may affect people with chronic diseases such as asthma and COPD, as well as infants and older people. People exerting themselves outside may experience shortness of breath and throat irritation.
