The woman whose dog was hit and killed by a car days after she abandoned it outside a Lewiston animal shelter last winter has pleaded guilty to a charge of cruelty to animals.

The Androscoggin County district attorney confirmed Monday that Sarah Vye changed her plea from not guilty to guilty.

Vye was given a suspended 90-day jail sentence and was ordered never again to own an animal.

Vye was charged with a misdemeanor in the case and could have faced a maximum punishment of just under a year in jail.

Vye, then 21 and of Mexico, was accused of dropping a yellow lab mix in front of the Greater Androscoggin County Humane Society in January. Video surveillance showed her van driving off and leaving the dog after the shelter had closed.

The dog was loose for three days before shelter employees found it dead. It had been struck by a vehicle.
