PRESQUE ISLE — The Aroostook Band of Micmac Indians is celebrating the completion of a $2.25 million tribal wellness center in far northern Maine.

The center is a more-than 8,000-square-foot facility in Presque Isle, shaped like an eagle.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says it’s symbolic for the tribe because Micmacs believe the eagle brings a vision of rebirth and health to the tribal community.

The USDA provided the Micmacs with a loan of more than a half-million dollars to assist in building the facility.

Other funding sources included the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the tribe itself.
