YARMOUTH — A man suspected of leading police on a high-speed chase before crashing a stolen vehicle into the side of a house last month has been arrested, according to Yarmouth police.

A post on the department’s Facebook page Tuesday said Shane McAlister, 28, of the “Portland area” was arrested and charged with eight crimes, including two counts of theft, eluding a police officer and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.

Shane is accused of stealing an SUV and leading Yarmouth and Maine State police on a high-speed pursuit through downtown Yarmouth on the evening on Aug. 26.

Yarmouth Police Lt. Dean Perry said at the time that a Chevrolet SUV was stolen in Lewiston late Friday afternoon and was seen in Portland, where it almost hit a police car. Shortly after 8 p.m., the vehicle was seen in Yarmouth and police gave chase. The chase ended after the driver went off the road and crashed into a home at 32 Main St.

The suspect, who may have been slightly injured in the crash, was able to escape, even though three police dogs were brought in to look for him.

McAlister was able to flee the scene after finding an unlocked vehicle with the keys in it near the crash site, the department said in its post Tuesday.

The Yarmouth department thanked the Bangor Police Department for locating McAlister and taking him into custody.

Yarmouth Police obtained warrants for McAlister for theft for receiving stolen property, eluding a police officer, aggravated criminal mischief, operating after habitual offender revocation, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, theft by unauthorized taking, leaving the scene of an accident and refusal to submit to arrest or detention.

No one from the Yarmouth Police was available Tuesday to answer questions about the arrest.
