GORHAM — Matt Dias Costa scored a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes to start Bowdoin on its way to a 5-0 win over Southern Maine in a men’s soccer match Tuesday.

Sam Ward scored in the 13th minute to extend the lead to 3-0, and Ethan Ellsworth and Matty McColl added second-half goals.

Ward and Ellsworth also had one assist apiece, while Levi Morant collected two assists.

Noah Safian and Stevie Van Siclen combined to make one save for Bowdoin (2-1), which outshot the Huskies (0-3-2) by a 21-4 margin.

ST. JOSEPH’S 2, LYNDON STATE 1: Quaadir Palmer’s goal with 18:22 remaining gave the Monks (3-1-2) a 2-0 lead, and they held on to edge the Hornets (2-1) at Standish.

St. Joseph’s opened the scoring 31:44 into the game when Nicholas Borowski scored off a throw-in from Jackson Taylor.

After Palmer padded the lead, the Hornets cut the deficit to 2-1 with 4:31 remaining.

Blake Mullen made two saves for the Monks, who outshot the Hornets 26-7.

COLBY 1, THOMAS 0: Jacob Tower scored in the 79th minute to lift the Mules (1-1-1) over the Terriers (0-2-1) in Waterville.

Avery Gibson made six saves for the Mules, while Jonathan Dutka of Thomas stopped three shots.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

BOWDOIN 3, BATES 0: The Polar Bears (2-1, 1-1 NESCAC) scored a pair of second-half goals to pull away from the Bobcats (2-2, 0-2) at Brunswick.

Sophia Lemmer scored with an assist from Morgen Gallagher 10:34 into the game.

Evan Fencik extended the lead with an assist from Lauren McLaughlin in the 71st minute, and Anna Mellman scored an unassisted goal in the 86th minute.

Rachel Stout made three saves for Bowdoin. Sarah McCarthy stopped nine shots for Bates.

WHEATON 1, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0: Meagan Healy converted a penalty kick at 30:14 of the first half, and the Lyons (5-0) edged the Nor’easters (3-1) in Biddeford.

UNE nearly tied it late in the contest, but Edie Pallozzi’s header off a corner kick from Jessica Maywalt was just wide of the net.

Leann Wolf stopped seven shots for Wheaton. Brielle Robinson made three saves for the Nor’easters.

UMAINE-FARMINGTON 6, ST. JOSEPH’S 1: Six players scored and the Beavers (2-3) used a five-goal outburst in the second half to beat the Monks (2-4-1) in Farmington.

Kailyn Hill opened the scoring with a header in the sixth minute, converting a corner kick by Katie Clark.

The Monks responded with an unassisted goal from Haley DeGraca late in the first half, but UMF dominated the second half.

Lydia Roy put UMF ahead for good off a pass from Hadlee Yescott in the 49th minute. Sophie Manning made it 3-1 just five minutes later, knocking in a rebound off the post for her first goal of the season.

Two of UMF’s last three goals came on corner kicks, as Bridget Humphrey set up goals by Kaiti Kenney and Ashley Gleason, who scored off her own rebound. Yescott picked up the fifth goal after Kenney broke up a clearing attempt and deflected the ball straight to Yescott.
