A man has died after jumping off the Maine Medical Center parking garage at the corner of Congress and Gilman streets.
Portland Police Lt. William Preis said police got a call around 9 a.m. from someone saying a man was in the garage and looked like he might jump. When police arrived at the scene a few minutes later, he said, the man’s body was lying on Congress Street.
Clay Holtzman, a spokesman for Maine Medical Center, said the hospital was provided with the man’s name by police. After searching its database, Holtzman said, there’s no indication that the man was a patient at Maine Med.
Holtzman would not release the man’s name and police have not yet publicly identified him.
Preis said police believe the man jumped from an upper level of the garage, but not the top floor, which has a tall fence around it to deter people from jumping off the garage.
Traffic was rerouted off of Congress while fire trucks and police were at the scene. Evidence technicians were taking photographs and detectives were conferring near the body, which had been covered with a yellow plastic sheet and was surrounded by a short fabric fence and small pop-up tent.
