Local artist and woodworker Vincent Richel was commissioned by the Rangeley Friends of the Arts to create a sculptural set of doors for the new Lobby Gallery at the RFA Lakeside Theater on Main Street in Rangeley. They depict the scene looking over Rangeley Lake to the west over Bald Mountain and beyond. Utilizing a low-relief method, Richel incorporated exotic woods including ebony, walnut, zebra wood, curly maple, purple heart, and lace wood into the design. The materials for the doors were underwritten by a generous anonymous donor, and they were made possible by an equally generous, in-kind gift of labor from the artist.
They are fully functional barn doors, which remain closed when the lobby is being used during a performance, but can be opened to utilize the new flex-room for increased gallery space.
All are invited to stop by to appreciate the craftsmanship of Richel’s doors during upcoming events: “Vietnam, Long Time Coming,” a documentary film in honor of Veterans Day at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, and the RLRS production of “The Wizard of Oz” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11-12 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13.
