UNITY — A Vassalboro man was arrested on multiple charges Saturday night after he allegedly backed his car into a police cruiser and later kicked a police officer, according to a news release from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Nathan Rasmussen, 22, was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle under the influence, a class D misdemeanor; reckless conduct, a class D misdemeanor; driving to endanger, a class E misdemeanor; and assault, a class D misdemeanor.

Around 7:50 p.m. on Saturday, Deputy Cassandra McDonald saw a 2004 Jeep moving on School Street on the wrong side of the road. According to the news release, she attempted to stop the vehicle, but it continued into an apartment complex.

McDonald stopped behind the Jeep, but before she could get out, Rasmussen allegedly backed the Jeep into the police cruiser, causing “considerable damage.”

McDonald placed Rasmussen in the back of her car while she checked on a passenger in the Jeep. Rasmussen allegedly attempted to kick out the window in the cruiser.

When Sgt. Nicholas Oettinger arrived and opened the cruiser door, Rasmussen allegedly kicked him. According to the release, Rasmussen appeared intoxicated and was “combative and was making incoherent comments.”
