A week ago, York County Shelter Programs in Alfred had very little money and only 20 turkeys lined up for its annual Thanksgiving turkey distribution, which last year provided 1,500 holiday boxes to York County residents.
After posting a plea for help on Facebook, donations of money and turkeys flowed into the organization.
This week, a gymnasium floor was lined with boxes that volunteers packed with turkeys, stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes and dessert.
Bob Dawber, executive director, said program staff and volunteers are passionate about making sure every York County family has a proper meal on the table on Thanksgiving.
Volunteers expect to pass out 1,700 to 2,000 Thanksgiving boxes this week. Dawber said those meals could feed as many as 10,000 people.
“We were overwhelmed with the amount of support from the community to help us pull this off,” Dawber said.
