Ogunquit officials denied a television report Tuesday that the town government is being investigated by the FBI.

Town attorney Peter Lowe said in an email that he spoke with acting Town Manager Mark O’Brien and the chairman of the Board of Selectmen, both of whom told him “they have no knowledge of any investigation by the FBI.” Barbara Dailey chairs the board.

Kristen Setera, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s Boston office, said in an email Tuesday that in keeping with the Department of Justice’s policy, the FBI can not confirm or deny the existence of an investigation.

WMTW-TV cited unnamed sources in a report that said “multiple people have been interviewed and questioned” by the FBI. The Portland television station said it was unclear what the agency might be looking into.
