WATERVILLE — Julie Millard, an innovative and accomplished professor of chemistry at Colby College, has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, according to a news release from the college. Millard, a member of Colby’s faculty since 1991, is one of 37 fellows in the chemistry section and one of 391 total fellows to receive the prestigious distinction this year.

An AAAS fellowship is an honor given to members by their peers for their efforts advancing science or its applications in service to society.

Millard, the Dr. Gerald and Myra Dorros Professor of Chemistry, has mentored more than 70 students in her laboratory and published in the areas of DNA-small molecule interactions and leadership for women in science. Her contributions to undergraduate education include her non-majors textbook Adventures in Chemistry, which highlights the relevance of chemistry to everyday life, and several pedagogical articles in the Journal of Chemical Education, according to the release.

She’s developed novel and exciting courses at Colby, including K-8 Chemistry Outreach Activities, in which students develop age-appropriate science experiments to teach to elementary students. Millard was named a Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar by the Dreyfus Foundation in 2004.

The fellows will be recognized Feb. 18, 2017, at the AAAS annual meeting in Boston.
