WATERVILLE — Police are still investigating a spate of church vandalism and burglaries after a new attempted burglary was reported around 2:45 p.m. Friday.

A person responsible for the Unitarian Universalist Church on Silver Street reported that a door used as an entrance was damaged and that someone apparently had gotten into the building, although police don’t know what time the incident happened, Deputy Chief Bill Bonney said.

They also don’t know whether anything was taken from the church, he said.

The report of the incident comes after three other churches were targeted Tuesday and reported to police the next day.

The United Methodist Church on Pleasant Street was broken into and its door and lock damaged, though nothing appeared to have been taken. The First Baptist Church on Park Street and the St. Joseph Maronite Catholic Church on Appleton Street also reported damaged doors, but there was no evidence that anyone got into the building.

Police think the four incidents are connected because they occurred in such a short span of time, Bonney said.

“Our patrol division will be paying extra attention to the churches in the city,” he said.

Police asked that anyone with more information about the cases contact the Waterville Police Department at 680-4700.
