PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – A Portsmouth woman is facing charges after police say she pointed a handgun at police officers, prompting an hourslong standoff at her condo.

The officers had been performing a wellness check Monday afternoon.

Police say the woman opened the door holding a gun and pointed it at the officers. Police, fire and SWAT teams negotiated with her for several hours.

Police say she left the home at one point and poured a liquid into the courtyard that she said was flammable. Authorities say she later left the home again, put the gun to her head and threatened to shoot herself.

The woman surrendered around 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

She was hospitalized to determine if she needed medical treatment. She wasn’t immediately identified.

An investigation remains ongoing.
