CANAAN — A man wielding two large knives and slashing tires at a campground on U.S. Route 2 was subdued by other campers with duct tape before police arrived.

According to Somerset County Chief Deputy James Ross, Brandon York, 26, of Minot, was seen at the Skowhegan/Kennebec Valley KOA campground shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, where he wielded two large knives, slashed tires and beat on camping structures. All told, he caused about $3,000 worth of damage in the Sunday incident.

Ross said some of the camper owners got together and subdued York using duct tape and took his knives away before deputies were arrived. He was taken to the Somerset County Jail, where the intake department said he was still being held Tuesday.

York was charged with three counts of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, assault, and criminal mischief.

Ross said the case is still under investigation. He was not sure if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in York’s actions. He said he believed York was staying at the campground at the time of the incident.

The report on the incident was not yet complete, Ross said, so the information available was limited.
