Democrat Adam Cote was the top privately-financed fundraising in the primary elections for Maine governor, with $931,049 in contributions reported to the Maine Ethics Commission in campaign finance reports filed 11 days before the June 12 primaries. Shawn Moody was the top privately-financed fundraiser among Republicans, with $686,405 in contributions reported in his 11-day pre-primary report.

Two publicly financed candidates qualified for significant taxpayer support for their campaigns by collecting private seed-money contributions from voters. Garrett Mason, a Republican, collected $36,750 in seed money, triggering the release of $700,000 in public funds; and Betsy Sweet, a Democrat, collected $99,330 in seed money, triggering the release of $698,383 in public funds.

This database lists the reported political donations to the 11 major candidates in Maine’s 2018 gubernatorial campaign as of June 1, 2018. The data was drawn from campaign finance reports filed with the Maine Ethics Commission and include contributions made from April 1, 2017 through May 29, 2018.

Candidates running traditional, privately financed campaigns can receive a maximum contribution of $1,600 from individuals for the primary and $1,600 for the general election. Candidates seeking public campaign financing through the Maine Clean Elections Act program may collect seed money contributions of up to $100 and must collect 3,200 contributions of $5 in order to qualify for public financing.
